The Prediction
Dan Shipper's 2026 forecast is blunt: most new software will just be Claude Code in a trench coat.
New features won't be engineered in the traditional sense — they'll be buttons that activate prompts to an underlying general agent. The product layer becomes cosmetic. The intelligence layer becomes everything.
The Convergence
The boundary between SaaS and AI agents is collapsing in both directions:
- Every SaaS product is becoming an agent platform
- Every agent platform is building SaaS-style features
The companies that don't adapt face a binary outcome: die, or get acquired for pennies.
The Market Signal
This isn't abstract speculation. The so-called "SaaSpocalypse" — triggered by Anthropic's Claude and its erosion of traditional software value — wiped $285 billion in a single day and approximately $1 trillion total from SaaS stock valuations.
Shipper's framing is deliberate: this is not a market correction. It is a structural shift.
What This Means
The unit of software value is moving from features to outcomes delivered by agents. If your product's moat is its interface, its workflow, or its integrations — and not the intelligence underneath — you are building on sand.
